Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

Wayne LaPierre is just another fear monger capitalizing on the existential dread ignited by the attacks of September 11. In his dystopian image of America, the only thing standing between one’s death on the mean streets teeming with violent (and non-white) criminals and one’s personal safety is a firearm – preferably an assault weapon equipped with a large capacity clip.

Those that stoke the fears of anxious citizens, like LaPierre, are dangerous men. Behind their rhetoric of freedom and democracy they are consciously or unconsciously laying the groundwork for a fascist revival.

“Forerunners of fascism their efforts to gain political power played on people’s fears of revolution with its subsequent chaos, anarchy, and general insecurity. They appealed to nationalist sentiments and prejudices, exploited anti-Semitism, and portrayed themselves as champions of law, order, Christian morality, and the sanctity of private property.”
Columbia University on Fascism

“Fearful people are more dependent, more easily manipulated and controlled, more susceptible to deceptively simple, strong, tough measures and hard-line postures. … They may accept and even welcome repression if it promises to relieve their insecurities."
George Gerbner, Annenberg School for Communication

Are All Texas Politicians Batshit Crazy?

Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) , opposed to any limits on gun ownership, invited well know madman and fellow gun nut Ted Nugent to the SOTU. When asked about his questionable invitee, Rep. Stockman said, “I am excited to have a patriot like Ted Nugent joining me in the House Chamber to hear from President Obama."

It would appear that one of the many subjects on which Rep. Stockman is embarrassingly ignorant is American History. Is Rep. Stockman aware that his so-called patriot Ted Nugent lived for months in shit-filled diapers in order to avoid serving his country during the Viet Nam War? Sure Ted is all wrapped up in the Red, White, and Blue now - but where was Ted when America called for his help? Unlike the thousands of war protesters who took the difficult course in opposing the war and faced criminal prosecution, little Ted took the coward's path. Ted - a coward then and a coward now.

All of the urinals in the VFW and American Legion men's rooms across America sporting Jane Fonda targets should be updated with one of draft dodger Nugent. Fair is Fair.
