Ignorance in Action

Schools to Skip Obama's Speech
School districts across central Ohio learned yesterday that the list of things parents want their children protected from -- drugs, predators, violence -- now includes the president of the United States delivering a "stay in school" message.

Faced with phone calls from angry parents who don't want their children to view the Tuesday address to the nation's students by President Barack Obama, several districts have decided to just say no.

The U.S. Department of Education has billed the 15- to 20-minute speech as one that will talk to students "about persisting and succeeding in school."

But critics, fueled by talk radio and conservative bloggers, have objected nationwide, fearing the address from a high school in Virginia will cross the line into politics. Bill Bush, Columbus Dispatch

Decades of inattention to our public schools have now produced a growing herd of citizens living comfortably in a lazy state of ignorance. These apathetic voters can name the celebrity panelists on American Idol but not their congressional representatives. These same ill-informed loudmouths want to censor an American president from speaking to school children out of fear that President Obama will use this opportunity to score cheap political points. WTF? Do these people think everyone's ethics are for sale if the price is right? It's clear that this proud legion of conservatives truly believes that a liberal education does not inure the mind to the seduction of ignorance. It should be evident to anyone reviewing the anti-Obama propaganda that there's a strong racist tint to these attacks.

I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative.John Stewart Mill

I truly do not understand this. Why object to the President (elected by the people) urging children to be civic minded? I understand parents wanting to set the moral code for their child, but what is wrong with instilling a social conscience in children? or are the Republicans just afraid that their children will become disenchanted with their parent's lack of compassion and civic duty?
